Axzion and SpanSet as key components in use at the Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant
With the successful removal of the third of a total of four steam generators, each weighing 365,000 kg, another important milestone has been reached at the Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant.
We are proud to have manufactured this modular external crossbeam with a load capacity of 440,000 kg on behalf of Framatome GmbH for the power plant operator PreussenElektra.
Initial situation and original concept
The original design of the external crossbeam was developed by Framatome on the load side using a concept involving heavy grummets and rope locks (steel construction), manufactured by Axzion and used for the first time in 2025 at the Unterweser nuclear power plant.
Challenges involved:
Complex handling at a working height of around 30 metres
Long set-up and changeover times
Damage to the coating of the steam generators
Initiative by the SpanSet Group
As part of a SpanSet GmbH factory tour initiated by Axzion, Framatome GmbH, PreussenElektra, TÜV Nord and TÜV Süd came together in Übach-Palenberg in January 2024 and were introduced to the technology, production and quality management involved in the manufacture of textile slings by Mr Ingo Burbach and Dr Jörg Krzoska.
The event was very well received by all participants and was subsequently praised on several occasions.
Result: technical optimisation
In 2026, SpanSet Magnum-X® heavy-duty textile round slings were used for the first time to connect the outer crossbeam to the steam generator.
The advantages:
Significantly reduced set-up and lifting times
Safe and significantly simplified handling
Effective protection of the steam generator coating
Conclusion
This project is a strong example of what can be achieved through partnership, technical expertise and the commitment of our Axzion and SpanSet teams.
